Kentucky Permit Test
Earning a Kentucky teen driver learners permit with the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet is easy. Make sure to take the permit practice test to help you get ready for the knowledge test.
For many young people, learning to drive and earning a license is a rite of passage. Navigating the task of earning a permit, then a license, does not have to be a difficult task, as long as you understand the process.
In Kentucky, the first step in the process is to apply for a learners permit by taking the knowledge test at the age of 16. With the permit, teens can drive with a supervising adult to accumulate the required practice hours.
Upon driving for 6 months with the permit, drivers can apply for an intermediate license by passing the skills test. This license allows the teen to drive independently with certain restrictions on passengers and nighttime driving.
After another 6 months with a clean driving record, drivers are eligible for a full unrestricted license upon completing the driver education requirements.
Parents should also take their responsibility for guiding the teen driver seriously. You can learn more about the licensing process and setting expectations for safe driving in the Family Guide to Teen Driver Safety. http://transportation.ky.gov/Driver-Licensing/Documents/Teen%20Driver%20-%20A%20Family%20Guide%20to%20Teen%20Driver%20Safety.pdf New drivers and their parents can also find important teaching practices in the official Kentucky Parent’s Guide for First Time Drivers. http://transportation.ky.gov/Driver-Licensing/Documents/Parent%20Guide%20-%20Teaching%20Your%20Teen%20Driving%20Habits%20for%20Life.pdf
